Madras sent two doubles teams to the state tournament, held May 22-24 at OSU Tennis Center in Corvallis.
Cousins Juan Pablo and Isidro Olivera went 1-2, playing three good matches. The Buffalo girls team that qualified, Yashira Chavaro and Arely Alonso, won games in each set they played, but went 0-2.
The Oliveras got a bye in the first round, then faced a Catlin Gable team that won their opener 6-2, 6-1. The Madras pair played outstanding in the first set but lost 7-6. In the second set, they went down 6-2.
The Catlin Gabel match was a tough 2.5-hour battle.
The Oliveras got “well-deserved compliments and respect from not only their opponents after the match, but also their Catlin Gable coach. Compliments from a year-round program don’t come lightly,” said MHS boys coach Margaret Kincaid.
The loss put them into the consolation, where pro-sets (one set to eight games) were played in the early rounds. The Buffalo pair gutted out a win over a team from Four Rivers 8-6. Awaiting next was a Marist Catholic team that took the MHS duo down 8-3.
Juan Olivera ended his career as the first MHS three-time state qualifier, noted Kincaid. Isidro is a junior.
The Buffalo girls doubles team at state qualified as the fourth-place team from the Special District 4. At state, like the boys, they opened with a Catlin Gable opponent and fell 6-3, 6-1. In consolation action, they lost 8-3 to a Four Rivers pair. Both Chavaro and Alonso are seniors.
