Kaydon Haro’s state-best time in the 200 and Tyler Rahi’s domination in the pole vault highlighted the Culver Bulldogs’ efforts at the 2A Special District 4 Championships at Ward Rhoden Stadium in Prineville May 23.
After Weston-McEwen edged the Bulldog boys in the 4×100 relay, and after Tiger-Scott sprinter Wyatt Parsons ran sub-11 to edge Haro in the 100, the Bulldog junior won the 200 meters in 22.47, the fastest 2A time in the state this season. It’s the second time Haro has set that mark this spring.
Rahi, meanwhile, went 13-0.25 to take the boys pole vault title. Irrigon’s Samuel Cole was far back in second at 10-11.5.
Culver won an amazingly close 4×400. The team of Cole Rahi, Noah Cory, Brogan Weaver and Haro finished in 3:38.28 to nip Enterprise, who finished in 3:38.37. Hard-luck Stanfield was third in 3:38.84. Weston-McEwen was less than a second back from the winner as well.
The top two placers in each event automatically qualify for state. Those finishing behind second can also qualify if they reach specific times or marks.
In the 4×100, the Bulldogs ran a 44.35 to Weston-McEwen’s 44.02. The Dawg squad included Haro and his brother, Keegan, and Cory and Rahi. With a second-place finish, they earned a spot at state.
In the 100, Parsons was able to hold on to get the win with a 10.94. Kaydon Haro finished in 11.12. Landon Bailey of Stanfield was third at 11.19 and Keegan Haro was fourth in 11.38. Both Bailey and Keegan Haro earned tickets to state, though, with qualifying times.
Cole Rahi finished a close second to Easton Berry of Weston-McEwen in the 300 hurdles to earn a spot at state. Berry crossed in 43.28 and Rahi 43.54. Ezra Storlie of Enterprise was third in 44.09.
Freshman distance runner Weaver took third in the 1,500 meters for Culver, coming just short of qualifying for state. Weaver finished in 4:24.17. Stanfield senior Pablo Galindo won in 4:22.16 and Enterprise sophomore Nathan Gonnella ran a 4:22.56.
Julian Sanabria wrapped his prep hurdling career with a fourth in the 110 and a 12th in the 300 hurdles.
Freshman Colin Hanvey was fourth in the 800 with a 2:16.34. Heppner senior Marty Medina won with a 2:08.59.
Carlos Giron was third in the shot for Culver with a 112-6 and fifth in the shot for Culver with a 38-8.75.
Patino leads Bulldog girls
Itzel Patino’s person best in the discus earned her a third-place finish. She threw 99-6. The winner was Grant Union’s Morgan Walker, who went 112-10, edging her teammate Mallory Lusco’s 110-0. Culver’s Caroline Skidgel was fourth in 86-1.
Patino was fourth in the shot with a 31-5.75. Walker and Lusco went one-two in the shot.
Skye Smoldt was third in the pole vault with a 7-3.25 mark. Myelle James of Enterprise won with an 8-5.5.
