The Madras City Council has approved the hiring of a new city attorney, Cary Colaianni, at a May 6 special meeting.

Colaianni has previously served as legal counsel for the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office and the city of Boise, Idaho, as well as serving as senior civil trial attorney for Ada County, Idaho. He attended the University of Idaho College of Law.

The employment agreement indicates the position salary will be $140,124 a year. The agreement also outlines vacation time, and up to $3,500 in relocation expenses, as Colaianni will be moving from Idaho to Madras, a requirement of the position.

This position marks the first time the city has hired a full-time in-house legal counsel, rather than a contracted position.
